FS 131 R is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great trimmer Stepped up from an FS56 and couldn’t be happier. It has plenty of power, even with the guard off (I’m aware this voids the warranty). I was skeptical about buying a 4 mix due to people saying it’s an “all or nothing” engine, but with the guard off and the right load you can feather the throttle very easily. Only complaint is that the grip is wearing away from only about 10 hours of use. 10/10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Weed wack'in Monster This thing is truly one heck of a machine. Before I get into the review of the FS131R, let me shed some background which led me to the purchase of this hoss.About 8 years ago, I purchased a FS45 from my local Ace. It had a hard life for sure. It was run over by my x-wife's car when it was just two weeks old, and I'm sure that added to her x-wife status. After having the FS45 repaired by my local Stihl dealer, it was a great little machine that got the job done around the house for the next several years.Aaaaand then I bought a north GA mountain cabin on 15 acres.... Poor little guy did all he could to clear overgrown weeds and small brush. It spent most of its time bogging trying to cut through the stuff. It was constant full throttle, go in, bog, back out and let it reach speed, then go in, bog, back out and repeat... Briers and small saplings? Forget about it... That had to be hand cut with shears (1000X+, talk about time consuming). The FS45 dealt with the mountain land for about 1.5years before it finally threw in the towel.FS131R...So after the little FS45 weed wacker that could, couldn't anymore, I went to get a replacement. I was initially interested in the FS56 and FS70R, but quickly found out that they were not for me (Not much different than the FS45). They would be great for residential duties, but I needed something that could cut through the nastiest of nasty. That means I needed something that was not cable driven like the FS45, 56 and 70R. I needed something with a steel shaft to run a brush cutter and have the HP to meet all demands. Going through the pro series lineup, I noticed that most trimmers had marginal bumps in HP. However, I certainly noticed the staggering 1/2-HP jump in power going from the 111R's 1.4HP to the 131R's 1.9HP. I told the sales guy: "Yeah, I'm done farting around with those weeds, I'll take the 131R chainsaw on a stick".Operating/experience/performance of the FS131RWhat a hoss. This things got more HP than I have sense. Definitely overkill for your typical around the house jobs, but it's reassuring to know that you can cut down a 100' Oak given enough time.(HP) Not once has it ever bogged on me. Where you hold the throttle is where it keeps the RPM. Full throttle is only used for the brush cutter (Tri-Blade) clearing the nastiest brush and saplings. (Fuel consumption/range) I'm sure the FS131 burns more fuel than my FS45/56, but it the size of the fuel tank allows me to run it literally twice as long before refueling. That is a huge benefit to me as often times I'm a quarter mile away from where I started (gas can).(Throttle manipulation/feathering)One "negative" that a couple of people mentioned with feathering the large motor trimmers is their sensitivity. Unlike the small motors, I'll admit the large motor throttle manipulation/feathering is in fact more sensitive. It is definitely manageable, you just have to get accustom to it. HOWEVER, throttle sensitivity has no impact on how I operate trimmers big or small. After a decade of operating countless trimmers, I always use my middle finger as a mechanical rev limiter for the light stuff. Meaning, with your pointer finger on the throttle trigger, your middle finger sits in between the handle and underside of the throttle trigger. It is a much faster and consistent method to go from idle to half throttle whether using a FS56 or 131R. If you start getting into the real tough stuff, simply move your middle finger out of the way and go full throttle. Wheres the small motor trimmers spend 75% of their time in full throttle, the 131R would need to be full throttle may 10% of the time. That probably also makes a huge difference in fuel efficiency of the 131R, vs the high rpm operation requirement of the smaller motor trimmers.(Starting)The FS131R is definitely easier to start than my previous FS45. The 131 as well as most new models come with an auto choke. That makes it much easier to start rather than manually setting it to choke then rushing to flip it off choke before the engine stalls out. The effort required to pull the cord is so effortless, a 90 year old Nun can do it. (Weight/Balance)At 12lbs, the 131R is a couple of pounds heavier than my previous FS45. This is a good thing and here is why: First off, the trimmer head, as well as it being a steel shaft has more mass. The benefits to the added mass, is less kick once the trimmer engages into the thickets. Not just trimming but edging too. Much less trimmer head bouncing than the cable driven or hollow shaft variants. The sling that the heavier (2-3lbs) steel straight shaft variants come with negate any added LBs. Not only that, but the sling keeps the trimmer perfectly balanced, making extended use a pleasure. I'm a relatively small dude at 150lbs, chicken legs & all, but I had zero fatigue after 6hrs of constant use the other day. I couldn't say the same for the lighter FS45, since it did not come with a sling. (Sound)The sound of this 131 thumper is a huge improvement over the smaller engines. It is a lot quieter with a much lower hefty displacement rumble (for a trimmer anyway). I cant say the same for the smaller displacement, high frequency screaming trimmers that are as pleasant to the ears as a Civic with a fartcan. (Overall)I couldn't be happier with the 131R. For me, it's the perfect machine. It exceeds all of my expectations in a trimmer. It was 2.5X the cost of my previous FS45, but this monster is a whole nother cup of tea. Buy once, cry once. For me, it was absolutely worth every penny plus some. I'd give the FS131R six stars if I could.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful!! I've been using a different brand line trimmer (Orange in color) around my pond for years and thought I had the best until I used the FS-131. I can honestly say that my line trimmer time has been cut in half. This thing is a BEAST!!! Absolutely No easing into the thick grass or weeds around the pond or outskirts just, hit them and keep going. My previous line trimmer needed a blade to take care of the tough stuff, NOT THIS ONE with .105 line!! It is a litter heaver than my last line trimmer But, a small price to pay for quality and power.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not for simple everyday weed eating... This power packed head unit is a beast. WAAAAAY more than what is needed for around the house weed eating. If thats all you need, do not get this. Get one of their smaller models. This beast is heavy, and not designed to run wide open throttle with no/light loads like a typical 2 stroke. This has valves like a 4 stroke, and must have a load to maintain WOT, or you will throw out the valve adjustment and possibly damage the valves/piston. I have the flower bed edger attachment for this and you def need the power of this unit for that. I am thinking of getting a pole saw attachment and the tiller attachment, which i'm sure will also make me happy that i bought this unit. This thing is easy to start, never stalls, hair trigger throttle (which makes it virtually impossible to run half speed for weed eating), large gas tank (needed), and gobs of torque (this is why its valved, to provide low end torque).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lots of Power But Several Issues 6 acres with everything from grass around trees and flowers to thick brush around t posts. Noticed they only put enough gas in to test it. Why not fill it up as a courtesy, or don't test? Doesn't really accomplishing anything. Why not go thru a compete qc, testing all nuts and bolts, etc.? I did it and found several loose. Add brand new line, replacing the old, brittle line (see below). Here is how my 1st use went:1. Tried to use owners manual to understand how to add line. Doesn't tell you. Should be specific to the type of loader you have. Nothing except to bump it to release line. Manual indicates instructions are on bottom of line head??2. Tried to adjust the shoulder strap, but too short to allow me to wear it while weed eating. Have it adjusted as far as possible, but still not long enough. 3. The spacer between the handle and the ring that the strap attaches to, spins freely. Cant hold onto to it (when starting unit or carrying around) because the unit will spin upside down on you. I assume it it there to keep the handle from slipping up toward motor. Also would be a good place to hold it while carrying it around. Now I will try to figure out a way to secure it from spinning. Stihl manual instructs you to get on hands and knees, grab the motor like you are choking something, and trying to pull starter cord. ???4. The line in the head was probably old and broke off inside the head continuously. I ended up carrying a flat head screwdriver in my back pocket so I could stop the unit and get that ridiculously rigid head off. The tabs are not very flexible. Screwdriver does work good. I had to use the weed eater with 1/2 of the line removed. It did better for some reason. I was able to keep that 1/2 line from breaking off inside. My biggest issue (and not Stihl's issue) is that the engine is sooo large (CC size) that you cant feather around flowers and trees. It is very difficult to run at a low speed. If you are doing nothing but rough weeds and brush, it will be more than large enough, but why use a weed eater for that? Just get a mower. If only a little brush, a smaller size unit will work fine. Also, have been reading that 2 strokes have better low end control. I thought I asked the salesman this and was told this unit would do the same thing. One last thing. I am reading a lot about Stihl owners replacing the existing head with competitors speed feed head. Just another example that there is not much difference between Stihl and box store weed eaters. I don't put all blame on Stihl because I should have done my research before buying. I take responsibility for this. Now I own a brush cutter and will go to the store this weekend to look for the competitors with the speed feed head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing has POWER I own a commercial landscaping business and we also do maintenance for school districts. I use this trimmer for 8 hrs of continues run time only to stop for gas or line and this thing is bulletproof. Powerful but not a gas hog, only down side is shortly after break in period time. you need to have valve clearance adjusted. Ive bought three of these trimmers and have sold them in running order and got back most of my initial investment. Great bang for your buck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All Around an Excellent Product An "All-Around" Excellent piece of Machinery. The very best of Quality, not to mention Very Durable and Dependable, and backed by a great Warranty. The STIHL FS 131R has plenty of power to cut through some of the toughest weeds, actually not a noticeable difference in power when compared to a FS 250R, but the FS 131R is lighter, weighing close 2 lbs. less than the FS 250R. The Power difference is virtually unnoticeable to me, so I chose the FS 131R considering it has nearly as much power as the FS 250R but weighs considerably less. Also the FS 131R is over $150 cheaper than the FS 250R so it's an unbeatable price compared to other weed eaters. So to sum it up, The STIHL FS 131R is an Amazing Product, it's very, very Dependable and Excellent Quality. It has unbelievably Excellent Power and for the Price compared to other Models and other brands, it's simply an Excellent Value!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Trimmer I came from a FS55 with the bicycle handlebars. The FS131 R has much more power and sounds smazing with the 4 MIX engine. I find that the loop handle is significantly more maneuverable than the handlebars. I trim alot of fence and a pond and this is perfect for holding at different angles to get all along the banks and along the fence. The engine starts on the first pull without having to choke it. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unreal Power! First, the negatives, the shaft could be about 6" longer and the throttle is a bit touchy which takes some getting used to. I think that will get better with more time on the machine as i've only handled four yards with it thus far since new. The good-great. This thing has unbelievable power and goes through anything quick, fast and in a hurry. It does burn some gas but I suspect that's what you'll get with any trimmer of this power and torque. I needed a trimmer that could do it all and it is a bit overkill for light trimming but i'm happy to live with that for what it can do to thicker brush just with the factory string loaded on the factory 25-2 cutting head. Bought some .105" to replace the factory line with and probably will do even better with thicker stuff!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More power than I ever thought I would need I got this model because they didn't have the 111R in stock. I didn't think I would need the power of the 131R. But for $30 more it was worth getting more power just in case I ever need it. I have used it for yard trimming, tall grass trimming, and brush cutting. I have the normal gard and the large gard and I love the large gard. I also have the saw blade for it I haven't used that yet but plan to soon. It starts up fast and runs so smoothly. The four stroke sounds deep and is easier on the ears than other two strokes I have used. The tap to feed string head works really well and is very easy to load. I enjoy using this trimmer unlike every other trimmer I have owned. Stihl has always been recommended to me each time I have bought a new trimmer but I never wanted to spend the money. I am so happy I did this time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful, reliable and a great value Purchased the FS 131 R to replace my old well used FS110. Was pleasantly surprised with the responsive nearly 2 Hp motor. Using a hedge trimmer attachment it will make quick time in clearing blackberry patches. Love the choke mechanism, makes for easy starts. Prefer this model over handlebar versions...seems like I have more control and the weight is fine. I'm 55 and believe with proper care this will be the last trimmer I'll ever need. Looking forward to using this beast. Extended run time is a plus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Brush Cutter I use this cutter multiple hours almost daily. I manage 27 preserves with multiple trails and have found the quick attachment to be useful when switching heads on the fly from cutting grass to shrubs. The product is new and still in its first season but its handled the heavy use nicely. The weight is spot on for longer hikes into the woods to clear hard to access parts of the trail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't let the nit picky reviews bother you! I am in the business for decades. I have gone through to many trimmers to keep track of. It is not a two stroke so it has different charactistics. If it throws rocks in your hands that's your falt. Mine starts with out priming or choking it and idles really smooth probably my favorite trimmer ever

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Line feed is unreliable Overall its ok. The biggest issue is the line feed. It seems to heat up with continuous use. Its like it melts inside the head. I just bought it and it takes way longer to accomplish the same task due to having to stop and take the bump head apart and fix the line

Rated 4 out of 5 by from FS131-R: Big power, has some shortcomings My 1987 FS66 handlebar unit wouldn't start on it's 30th birthday. Time for a replacement. I wanted more power and got it! I trim an average of 2 hours weekly. Like other reviewers, I don't like how this unit runs. I can feather it around 3/4 throttle to get it running smooth. Full throttle brings bogged down missing of the engine. Very undesirable. My pet peeve is this trimmer head. It LITERALLY holds 10 feet of .095" line. I am constantly reloading this thing. I don't know any pro using this daily that will tolerate this. Zero stars here folks. Another reviewer commented on it being the rock thrower. Completely correct. The line cutting shroud is way too short. You simply get covered in grass (or rocks) with this. I asked the dealer to order an Auto cut head and longer shroud like I have on the FS66 model. The dealer talked me out of handlebar unit. This unit has a 10 lb. head and the shoulder strap just doesn't do it for me. Especially with all the long ditches I cut. Pay attention to this if you are shopping these units. Overall, I like the power. Honestly, I am frustrated and really disappointed I bought this model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FS131-R Awesome Machine I have read the reviews about the "2 speeds" idol and Full throttle with no ability to progressively feather the throttle and I was honestly a bit concerned about using it. I bought it on the advice of my dealer and can happily report that the throttle is easily feathered and very progressive. I stepped up from a 2-Cycle to the FS131R and I love it. It's delicate enough to get into sensitive areas and has loads of torque to handle the tough stuff. This machine is a home run! Right power, right quality, right service, and right price. Couldn't be happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine! Great machine! Simply awesome power. I have both the FS 250 and FS 240. Wanted something with the power of both but lower weight than the 240, now that the 250 is no longer available. 2.5 lbs less than the 240 and $200 cheaper. I could tell no difference in top end power. Because of lower weight I could run it all day without getting fatigued. Now, because of 4-stroke it does only run all-out. No real slowing it down. But for big, wide-open jobs, this is your machine. For smaller, or tighter jobs, go with a smaller model. But this 131r will mow down heavy grass and reeds all day without any effort. I used the poly blades, which made it even easier. Also starts easier than the 250 or 240.I was in love with it by the end of the day.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The little go-kart turned trimmer When Stihl discontinued the 250R and replaced it with the 240 R behemoth I went in search of a suitable replacement. The 130 R has impressive power to weight ratio and looked promising. The reduction in weight was nice and the go-kart like sound of the new style engines made me laugh the first time i started it. It felt like it has 90% of the power of the model up, the 240R.The main complaint I have about this trimmer is it does not have a very linear power band like the old trimmers and has a very narrow sweet spot for everyday grass trimming. When you press the trigger in a bit, it can barely trim anything, push it in a hair more and it spins at a rock-launching mach 3 full speed. The remaining 90% of the trigger movement does not appear to add anymore power or speed. The clutch can be clunky depending on the position it stops in and it does not like being upside down when invert trimming gardens as you will hear other clunking and pinging notices as it engages. When walking with the trimmer at idle, the rpms jump up and down significantly with every step making you wonder how sturdy things are inside compared to their older trimmers. The new trigger is no longer part of the hand grip but a piece of thin breakable plastic. It feels like it sticks farther out and is more fatiguing on the finger keeping it farther from the hand grip. I think this trigger style contributes to the lack of variance in throttle and its touchy nature.I have some trouble starting it on colder mornings but it eventually goes.I think with some minor design tweaks this trimmer could be a real winner. It's defiantly more delicate than prior trimmers, from the trigger right down to the pull cord grip, so treat it with care. It should get me through the year but am eager for more revisions!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Drove over it with my tractor This unit would not bog down. Cut a lot of weeds 4 to 5 foot. I put it in my tractor; front loader. It flew out and I ran it over. My tractor weighs about 3200 pounds. It slightly cracked the case surrounding the motor. It fired right up. You pay for what you get. Buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A big step up for me, from typical low cost big store trimmers I'm near 70 years old, and wasn't sure I could physically swing a heavier "pro" trimmer like my new LS 131 R. (I've always purchased smaller, lighter, cheaper trimmers.) Big surprise when I first used this Stihl as, even at a few pounds heavier, it is so well balanced that I spent the first five minutes just hand holding it (with no shoulder strap) — but of course using the supplied strap is more comfortable in the long run. A real treat to me was how well the extra horsepower is put to use cutting my two acres+ of thick grass and weeds. Big surprise too at how well it cut the newer blackberry bush sprouts. (With the right head I think it will do OK on any part of a blackberry bush.) Add to that the overall quality (which I already knew about from my Stihl chainsaw) and it's well worth the cost for me, over weaker, lighter trimmers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this machine oozes unbelievable mega power what a machine it's unbelievable the power this thing has it almost makes 130R look like a joke just got it yesterday evening did a little testing did good and did some more testing in alot higher thicker weeds and only used 1/4 throttle and it went through it with ease no boggin down whatsoever im highly impressed and satisfied with this machine i also like the rubberised loop handle it's alot more comfortable than it is on the 130R the bigger fuel capacity is also a big selling point to me and is slightly lighter than the 130R but my one complaint is the short throttle trigger stihl should've kept the throttle trigger from the previous models on this one otherwise an outstanding machine worth every penny im gonna soon get the 36-2 head and put either .118 or .130 string in it and see what it can really do get this machine you wont regret it

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great name, poor performance It's hard to start when cold. Unless you are running full throttle, it stalls out and boggs out. I am only trimming around my house and it's hard for it to run even doing that. I thought that I was buying a good quality item, I was mistaken!
